SCOOP: Less–stringent AI proposals are bringing supporters in from the cold; ‘Really unacceptable’: lawmakers rip California’s glacial broadband rollout.
FIRST IN DECODED: NEW BATTLE LINES — An open letter obtained by Decoded reveals a host of AI scholars and experts are backing a key AI safety bill in Sacramento, showing how less far-reaching proposals this year are drawing support from opponents of a wider-ranging proposal last year.
Published by AI safety nonprofit Fathom, which is co-sponsoring the bill, the letter is signed by a host of AI academics and researchers in support of state Sen. Jerry McNerney’s voluntary AI testing bill.
The letter is notable not just because of the names on it, but because some of the new supporters actively opposed state Sen. Scott Wiener’s SB 1047 last year, or stayed on the sidelines during the roiling debate it created. That includes Sam Hammond of the Foundation for American Innovation, an early outspoken critic of Wiener’s effort last year.
