IVOs in Action: Self-Harm & Teen Suicide

At Fathom, we built and are scaling the concept of Independent Verification Organizations for AI because we saw how the technology was challenging traditional approaches to governance, much as it is beginning to disrupt or influence nearly everything else in society and the economy. Our stance has always been that governments lack the nimbleness, speed, and expertise needed to govern this technology alone, while major AI developers often choose or are forced to prioritize speed and innovation over safety. We envision IVOs as stepping into the breach, creating a system of third-party independent subject matter experts that can effectively and objectively carry out the technical side of regulating AI, in coordination with the government setting outcomes or performance objectives.
